Teeth Whitening in Lawndale, Chicago
Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.
Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home teeth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since teeth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Teeth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.
Reasons for teeth whitening:
Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
Yellow, brown stained teeth.
What does teeth whitening involve?
This type of teeth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear, plastic, trays.
At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.
You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
Now Offering Kor Teeth Whitening
For a non-invasive treatment that can add shades of brilliance to your smile, Lawn Dental Center offers Kor® teeth whitening. Whether seeking to regain a tooth’s natural coloration or improve upon it, Dr. Charles Olono provides a product made to help patients reach their aesthetic goals comfortably.
Who Benefits from Teeth Whitening?
Professional teeth whitening can serve most patients seeking a more natural sheen to their smile without altering the structure of teeth. There are many situations where dental staining can be addressed particularly well by Kor. These situations include discoloration due to excessive fluoride exposure or use of medications known to have a cosmetic impact on teeth, something many whitening products cannot treat. Of course, Kor is also useful for more common whitening concerns. Teeth appearing yellowed due to the normal wear of the outer layers is a great example. Additionally, this cosmetic dental treatment minimizes stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, and smoking.
While capable, Kor is not a permanent solution. To keep your teeth bright, Dr. Olono works with you to provide regular maintenance. It is also important to note that teeth whitening will not change the color of restorations such as fillings or crowns. If you plan to receive these restorations and are curious about whitening, our dentist may recommend brightening the smile before adding a prosthetic. That way, your smile stays consistently bright.
What Does Teeth Whitening Involve?
At Lawn Dental Center, our goal is to replicate the look of a naturally white smile. The personalization of take-home systems produce noticeable results gradually and consistently; your smile stays beautiful in a realistic way. Patients receive customized whitening trays that securely hold the Kor whitening agent against their teeth to make sure the treatment is fully effective.
In your first cosmetic dental visit, Dr. Olono takes impressions of your teeth to manufacture the customized trays. Once these are ready, patients will return to our Chicago practice for the initial application. After this hour-long treatment, Dr. Olono will provide you with proper care instructions for safe and effective at-home whitening. We also encourage regular follow-up visits to monitor your smile’s visible progress and to assist with issues arising during treatment.
The amount of time you will wear your tray at home depends on the degree of discoloration and your unique goals. Plans range from two 30-minute applications a day to wearing the trays overnight for a few weeks. Some sensitivity is normal after applying the gel, but Kor is specifically designed to keep that kind of discomfort at a minimum.
